How It All Happened: an introduction to The First International Feminist Book Fair

“The seeds for the First International Feminist Book Fair were sown early in 1983. The dozen women at that first meeting were from all branches of the book trade, including publishers, librarians, booksellers and printers. We dreamed – and we allowed ourselves BIG dreams – of a Fair that would not only affect Britain but would achieve worldwide attention. Over the months and endless meetings that followed two main goals emerged. The first was to put feminism, feminists writers, books and publishers squarely and firmly in the mainstream market place, onto the educational curriculum and on library shelves. The other aim was to move the spotlight of attention from Europe and North America, to search out and draw in feminists from around the world, particularly in the developing countries.”
