Each bilingual volume in The Defiant Muse series includes 60 to 80 poems by both well-known and rediscovered poets, selected on the basis of their individual merit and as illustrations of the evolution of feminist thought and feeling. In addition to the Hispanic volume, there is also a Dutch, German, French, Italian and Hebrew volume.

Reflecting their own cultural milieus as well as enduring themes, the poets write of love and friendship, revolution and peace, religion, nature, isolation, work, and family.

Poetry is a sensitive, courageous criticism of life. On this view, feminist poetry is a criticism of women’s lives, and of the injustices women have suffered, in various times and places, as a consequence of their sex. It is poetry not necessarily by marchers and activists. On the contrary, few feminist poets have been directly involved in feminist movements, which are fairly recent, whereas feminist poetry is very old.
